    Memory Compatability

Posted by Andre M on 21st May 2025

Next day delivery by Extreme PC for this kit. Thanks 48GBs on special was more attractive than importing a faster kit. High performance kits are not widely available here in NZ. A distributor's policy apparently. My Ryzen 9950X on X870 booted the stock XMP profile of DDR5 6800 at CL34 using just 1.35 volts. That's pretty much the sweet spot for AMD using DDR5. Faster speeds require looser timings, i.e., more latency, which can hurt performance. My Gigabyte mobo selected the XMP profile automatically. I am not sure I like that, because I prefer to chose setting myself, but thankfully it worked. The kit just survived 30 minute run in Cinebench R23, so it should be stable using the stock XMP profile. I am not going to bother trying to run it faster, even though I am quite sure the kit will probably reach DDR5 7200 CL38. More volts to do it means more heat, which can risk the kit for very little, if any actual performance gains. Not worth the hassle.
